A career in the field of education nowadays is one which presents great opportunities as the importance of an excellent education should not be understated as well as the need for qualified teachers is as important to the quality of education offered to students.
A career in the field of education requires certain skills for one to be considered an effective teacher. In addition to knowing everything about their subject of specialization, teachers should have the capability of communicating well and inspiring trust and confidence in students. A teacher should also be able to motivate students and understand their educational and emotional needs. They must know how to identify and react to the different personalities and character of their students and apply diverse teaching methods that will give a higher student achievement result.
Organized, patient, and creative are three important skills that should be acquired by a person who has a career in the field of education. They must have the ability to work cooperatively and effectively converse with other teachers, support staff, parents, and other members of the society.
A career in the field also requires that teachers be licensed aside from having a bachelor’s degree and complete an approved teacher training program with a prescribed education units and subjects as well as supervised practice teaching. Other states also require technology training as a part of the process of teacher certification and some require a master’s degree in education.
A person who plans to take a career in the field of education should carefully investigate teaching programs that may be offered by different colleges and universities and should cautiously take into account some factors such as: what type of teacher you want to be; talk to teachers who you respect and like and ask them for advice; consider what works best for you and what you prefer such as four years at the same school or two years of college and then transferring to a four-year program; will you be able to attend school as a full-time student, part-time, weekends, distance or online learning; is the school offering services such as resume services, job fairs, job placement, and networking opportunities and if there are fees connected to these services; what is the cost of the education; what are your long-term goals as a teacher; open the options for gaining experience before going to college such as getting involved in tutoring students, or summer day camps, or after-school programs; and make sure that the college or university you’ll be attending is state accredited and their programs are meeting national standards accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) or the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC).
